Our New NCBI Accredited Builder Certification

Ideally a contractor’s learning never ends. Continuing education and additional certifications can be signals of smoother projects and better planning, and those have always been things we’ve strived for.

Recently our fearless leader, Chris Smith, earned a certification through the North Carolina Builder Institute (NCBI).

To earn this particular certification, a builder must:

  • Hold an active General Contractor license

  • Complete a required 72 hours of approved continuing education

  • Stay current on building codes, industry standards, and best practices

The NCBI’s website explains that these certifications are designed to train and recognize the top home building professionals in the state. Because this coursework requires significant time investment beyond the normal continuing education, these certifications speak to a real dedication to the craft.

What Is the North Carolina Builder Institute?

The North Carolina Builder’s Institute was established in 2000 to offer a combination of practical training, business skills, and to challenge builders to think more critically about how they approach projects.

The organization has gathered some of the best minds in the construction industry to lead their classes. From the annual 8 hours of required continuing education to more deliberate certifications (like mentioned above), the NC contractor community as a whole is stronger.

The NCBI offers 70 courses, which includes those that lead to the Accredited Builder, Accredited Remodeler, and Accredited Master Builder designations.

You Can Check This For Yourself

Before engaging in any project, homeowners can:

  • Ask for a copy of a contractor’s license before signing a contract

  • Review the license to see if any extra certifications or designations are listed

  • Use this information as part of the decision-making process when comparing contractors

Once our NCBI designations are fully listed in the system, you can confirm it on their website. (Link coming.) In fact, contractors are required to show you their license information on the bid they provide for you.

Why does this matter to you?

  • Gives you as the homeowner a greater confidence that the contractor you are hiring is trustworthy and committed.

  • Communicates that the General Contractor is around other professionals in their industry, gaining wisdom into how they can better run their company and serve their clients.

  • Helps you determine who may be the best fit for your project.

It isn’t just another certificate. Any designation earned through the NCBI is a reflection of hours invested in getting better at construction itself, running an effective business, and providing a better experience for the homeowner. Each class is aimed at the target of bettering the construction industry in North Carolina. Next time you are looking into hiring a Contractor for your bathroom remodel or custom home, this could very well give you a greater confidence in your decision.
